Flagpoles for the Museum

During a recent RAFBHA “Skype” Board meeting it was suggested the Museum was missing some flagpoles.

This proposal came from At Large member Fred Mischke to include the Associations “Spirit of Ramey” colors. A motion was presented and was passed unanimously.

Pedro “Pete” Garcia and Angel Galvan, both USAF retirees and Museum volunteers, hold the Museum Colors

At Large member Garred Giles volunteered to place the order and yours truly presented the “Spirit of Ramey” graphic artwork, provided by At Large member Robert Matheson, to the flag shop.

The reason to tell this story is to; once again, demonstrate the commitment of the RAFBHA Board Members to the growth, development and permanence of the Borinquen Field/Ramey AFB Museum. We couldn’t be in better hands.

Doing a Great Job!

My goodness what a wonderful surprise!  The pictures and stories being shared on this website are going well beyond my expectations.  I click on “News Feed” and marvel at what I’m seeing.  I’m really enjoying the photos and descriptions you are uploading to the site.  I’m also enjoying viewing your profiles.  It is interesting to read when and how you served and being able to see a picture with your profile.  I see some of you are also using the messaging offered on the site. Excellent!

This site was set up to be accessible to members with the goal to collect your pictures, videos and stories which can then be viewed by others and preserved for future generations to enjoy.  Every picture, video, and comment you share becomes part of the RAFBHA database.  This information also becomes available for use in the excellent RAFBHA newsletter, View From The Tower, and the Borinquen Field – Ramey Air Force Base Museum.

So to all the members and followers of Ramey Air Force Base, keep sharing your pictures  and memories.  You are doing a great job and your efforts are much appreciated.

Help with Ramey Air Force Base Hospital Records

Back in October the following message was received:

From: Yvette Austin
Subject: Birth and Death Records

Message Body:
I was born at Ramey AFB july 3rd 1962 while my father was stationed
there. . I was a twin and was told my sister passed away after being
born. Where can I get any info on
where she is buried or any records ? I do know that the Dr who
delivered us was Cpt George Ball USAF MC. Any info would be great
..thank you !

I wrote back to Yvette and told her I would post her message to the website.   I don’t have an answer for Yvette, but perhaps someone following the website might be able to comment on this post and help her.  I have sent her the link to this post so she can follow along and also post her own comments as well.

Questions such as Yvette’s are fairly common and are probably the most frequently received from the contact form on this website .  I know there have been posts on the Ramey Facebook site regarding questions such as this, and someone (and Gerry I think it was you)  answered this question on Facebook.

Yvette, if you are following this post, I hope we can get your question answered.

Dragon Warriors take over Museum

A very special visit had been arranged, by no other than Don Agustin Martinez (see “I Was Here In 39” story), to visit the Museum facilities. Dragon Warrior Unit 2011 was landing at the Museum.

this group togive their children
and other kids, from the
historic City of San Sebastian,
a sense of civic responsibility.

Among their activities are PT drills, field trips and assignments of responsibility. In general they provide the kids with an awareness that everyone can make a difference in their community and the environment around them.

They do this on a volunteer basis and with a lot of love. They remind us of what the staff does here at the Museum.02-5x72-300x214

Christmas at Ramey Air Force Base

Happy Holidays to all my RAFBHA friends.

I thought it would be interesting to see if I can get some of you who served at Ramey Air Force Base to comment on what it was like for you to be away from home during the holiday season.

I asked my husband what it was like for him.  He said he would go to the base chapel on Christmas Eve.  On Christmas what he seems to remember the most is the food.  The food he said was extra special, not the standard fair.  Then he would go back to the chapel for a Christmas service.  I asked him if he was ever able to travel home for the holidays and he said never.  “The base had to be covered at all times, regardless of the holidays.”  I then asked if he was ever able to call home and that too was a no.  This was in the early 50′s and a call to his mother and father in Michigan was simply too expensive.

If you have special memories of the holidays spent at Ramey Air Force Base and wish to share them, just fill in the comment section below.  This will create a message thread others can view and also leave their comments.

To all my Ramey friends, Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for 2012

Ramey AFB Tour-ist Certificate

The RAFBHA received an e-mail from Mr. Pat Donnelly. The message was received thru our website and forwarded to the Museum by our webmaster and RAFBHA Board Secretary Lori Mischke.

Pat wanted to donate his father’s pieces of history to the Museum. Pat’s father, SMSGT Brian J. Donnelly, was stationed at Ramey AFB from 1964 until 1967. Among his many assignments, before being stationed at Ramey, was photographing “Operation Crossroads” at the Bikini Atoll.

SMSGT Donnelly has passed away but his son continues to honor his father’s service to his country. The RAFBHA and the Museum Staff are pleased to carry on his legacy.

These are a few of the items being donated by Pat. We will continue to post SMSGT Donnelly’s items as they continue to arrive.

The Museum continues to grow thanks to all the individual donations being sent to us.  We thank you for continuing to support the Borinquen Field – Ramey AFB Museum.

Happy New Year From The Board of Directors of Ramey Air Force Base Historical Association

Just received a wonderful message from Community Liaison for RAFBHA, Gerry Giles, “Three flagpoles and two flags now installed this 31 December 2011!!!! Hooray!”

P1010001

Board members, Gerry Giles and Ricardo Busquets  have worked very hard to make this flagpole project come about.  The Ramey Flag will be raised soon followed by the lighting of the flagpoles. This is just one of the major accomplishments made by RAFBHA this past year.

As an officer for RAFBHA I have truly enjoyed this past year working with a great group of people. Although we’re spread out from as far away as California to Puerto Rico, we enjoy working together to preserve the heritage and memories of Ramey Air Force Base.  As we look to 2012, RAFBHA has much to look forward to starting with a FANTASTIC REUNION coming up in April in Albuquerque New Mexico.  Cathy Talkington has really put together a wonderful reunion package.  All the details will be released shortly as the newsletter, View From The Tower heads for the printer.  Once you have received your copy of the very best newsletter, information about the reunion will be posted to this website, so stay tuned.

On behalf of Chris, Cathy, Elton, Joyce, Ken, Bonnie, Gerry, Ricardo, Bob, Fred, and Lori…we wish you all a very Happy New Year!  See You at the Reunion!

It is with regret Kirtland Air Force Base Public relations department canceled our scheduled tour of the base. Due to military cutbacks in budgets, not only did the public affairs officer lose her job, but the entire department faced major cut-backs and curtailed all scheduled tours.
